Desert Sugar
[ Polyhedral Packaging ]
An exercise in experimental packaging influenced by origami and tessellation.
Sweet, spicy, and crunchy, these candied chiles are cooked in sugar and spices and baked to a perfect crispiness that makes them shatter like glass when bitten into. This concept is mirrored in the package with its shard-like triangle facets and its angular perforated opening.
Concepting & Prototyping
Now we know why Michelangelo chose to sculpt with marble instead of paper. This project went through endless iterations of models, physical prototypes, and digital concepting to find a form that could facilitate both the polyhedral concept and and the irregular opening. The final form had a more subtle curve and repeating facets, allowing for an angular yet still accessible opening. Desert Sugar provided a fascinating and wonderfully challenging study of packaging and how we can manifest non-traditional forms under the constraints of our packaging materials.
